I had a very positive experience getting my SQL certification. I learned a ton and got a lot of value out of the time I put in.
Although I’ve worked with databases in the past, I had never written a single line of SQL before. I really wanted to see what kind of things would be possible once I had a better understanding of SQL.
The early exercises were great for getting acclimated to using SQL. They were good at reinforcing and presenting the material. The exercises also weren’t too diluted or soft, even for an engineer. I was pleased to see as this kept me engaged all the way through to the end of the course. Ultimately I got 100% of what I wanted out of the course.
I think it was all about joins and relations. Before, there was knowledge that our data is connected, but not how. There’s not a lot of documentation between ops and developers, so now the understanding of how everything is related is stronger. This has really facilitated stronger teamwork between myself and my colleagues, especially the project- it got things moving and us working together.
I’m not particularly sure when SQL will be relevant to my work, but I definitely know it will be useful in the future. It’s a core, fundamental thing to know.
